The Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC) was pleased to host Dr Paul Ceely (Digital Catapult, UK) for a QAMSS SRI Advanced Technology Lecture as part of the Lent Term 2026 programme.
In his talk, “The Pathway to Commercial Implementation of Quantum Technologies,” Dr Ceely brought a valuable innovation and commercialisation perspective to the QAMSS lecture series. He outlined practical approaches for translating emerging technologies into real-world impact, focusing on how to assess where a breakthrough technology can create value and how to move from technical capability to deployable solutions.
A central part of the lecture examined the methodologies—and common pitfalls— involved in identifying credible use cases, understanding customer needs, and building a pathway towards commercial implementation. Drawing on Digital Catapult’s experience supporting innovation activities, Dr Ceely discussed how organisations can structure exploration and engagement to reduce risk, test assumptions early, and better align technical development with market demand.
To ground these ideas, the second part of the lecture presented examples from Digital Catapult’s activities in quantum computing and quantum sensing, illustrating how application-driven thinking can shape development priorities and help build stronger routes to adoption.
