On Friday, 30 May, the QAMSS Strategic Research Initiative was honoured to host Dr Maria Vasilopoulou from NCSR Demokritos, Greece, at the Cambridge Graphene Centre for one of its ongoing Advanced Technology Lectures this Easter term.
In a compelling talk titled “Room Temperature Superradiance in Perovskite Superlattices”, Dr Vasilopoulou shared exciting developments in the quest for practical quantum light sources operating under ambient conditions. She discussed the phenomenon of superradiance, where ensembles of emitters act as a single quantum dipole, radiating light with dramatically enhanced intensity. Traditionally confined to cryogenic environments, room-temperature superradiance marks a transformative advance for next-generation quantum technologies.
Dr Vasilopoulou presented recent breakthroughs in halide perovskite nanocrystal superlattices, which exhibit quantum coherence and enhanced emission rates even at room temperature. Her team’s innovative materials design strategy—developing continuous perovskite superlattices—addresses longstanding limitations such as surface trap states, paving the way for robust superradiant behaviour without the need for cryogenic cooling.
The lecture attracted a broad interdisciplinary audience and was followed by stimulating discussions. Throughout the day, Dr Vasilopoulou also engaged with researchers through lab tours and one-to-one meetings, strengthening research links and exploring future collaborations.
This lecture was part of the QAMSS Easter Term series, which continues every Friday until 8 August, bringing world-leading researchers to Cambridge to share cutting-edge work in quantum and advanced materials.
