On 16 May, the Cambridge Graphene Centre welcomed Dr. Emanuele Pelucchi from the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, as part of the ongoing QAMSS SRI Advanced Technology Lecture Series for the Easter 2025 term.
Dr. Pelucchi gave an engaging and in-depth talk titled “A ‘Modern’ Look at MOVPE (III-Vs); Precursors and the Relevance of Surface Processes (and a Touch of Pyramidal Quantum Dots)”. The lecture focused on the evolution of Metal-Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) and its crucial role in developing advanced semiconductor heterostructures for optoelectronic and quantum applications.
He highlighted how surface processes, although long acknowledged, have often been underestimated in their importance for MOVPE. Drawing on his group's extensive research, Dr. Pelucchi discussed step organization, precursor decomposition selectivity, and surfactant effects in III-V materials—culminating in the development of site-controlled pyramidal quantum dots, a promising platform for quantum technologies.
Dr. Pelucchi leads the Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures (EPN) Group at Tyndall and oversees its MOVPE facility. His career includes key contributions to surface science, epitaxy, and quantum optics, with a research trajectory spanning EPFL and Science Foundation Ireland–funded leadership in semiconductor quantum dots.
