It was a great pleasure to welcome Professor James Tour from Rice University (USA) to the Cambridge Graphene Centre for the latest QAMSS SRI Advanced Technology Lecture on 17 October 2025.
Prof. Tour gave a fascinating talk entitled “Flash Joule Heating for Synthesis, Remediation and Valorization,” where he introduced his team’s pioneering work on a simple yet powerful approach to materials synthesis and recycling.
The Flash Joule Heating (FJH) method uses rapid, high-temperature pulses to convert a wide range of feedstocks into useful materials within seconds. Prof. Tour showed how this technique can be applied to:
produce new two-dimensional materials and compounds;
recover metals and rare earth elements from electronic waste, ores, and industrial residues;
upcycle waste plastics, food waste, and even retired industrial components into graphene, carbon nanotubes, and silicon carbide nanostructures;
and support soil and environmental remediation by removing toxic contaminants such as heavy metals and PFAS compounds.
All of this, remarkably, can be achieved using a setup costing around $200, built with a standard arc welder and graphite rods.
The talk attracted strong interest from across the University community, with lively discussions on the scientific mechanisms behind the process and its potential for sustainable materials innovation.
