On Friday, 23 May, the Cambridge Graphene Centre was honoured to welcome Professor Jeremy Baumberg FRS of the University of Cambridge as part of the QAMSS SRI Advanced Technology Lecture Series.
In his talk, titled “Watching the Molecule–Metal Interface in Real Time: Atomic-Scale Quantum Light”, Prof. Baumberg captivated the audience with a deep dive into how nanometre-scale control over light and matter interactions is opening new frontiers in molecular science. He addressed longstanding challenges in probing the molecule–metal interface—a central element in diverse areas such as molecular electronics, thermal transport, electrochemistry, and catalysis.
The lecture highlighted how extreme optical confinement through sub-nanometre architectures can reveal new physical insights at the atomic level. Prof. Baumberg discussed precision nanoassembly methods, the behaviour of optical dipoles near single metal atoms, and cutting-edge applications ranging from biosensing to mid-infrared metamaterials.
This thought-provoking session drew an engaged audience and marked another successful instalment in the Easter Term QAMSS lecture series, which continues through August. We thank Prof. Baumberg for sharing his pioneering work and contributing to the vibrant research exchange fostered by the QAMSS initiative.
