It was an honour to welcome Dr Lev Mukhanov from IMEC, Belgium to the Cambridge Graphene Centre today for the final QAMSS lecture of this term. Dr Mukhanov delivered a thought-provoking talk titled “From Qubits to Systems: A Full-Stack Approach to Quantum Computing”, offering a systems-level perspective on one of the most rapidly evolving areas of technology.
In his lecture, Dr Mukhanov presented quantum technologies as interconnected components within a larger computing framework rather than as isolated elements. He highlighted how the interaction between qubits, control electronics, software, device architectures and system integration challenges shapes the development of practical quantum systems. By considering these layers together, researchers can identify limitations early, explore design choices more effectively and build solutions that operate cohesively across the full stack.
Dr Mukhanov emphasised that as quantum platforms become more sophisticated, a holistic approach is increasingly important. Progress at the device level must align with hardware platforms, control strategies and system-level functionality. This integrated view helps clarify how emerging quantum capabilities may be incorporated into future computing infrastructures in a meaningful and scalable way.
