The Cambridge Graphene Centre was delighted to host Brian Corbett from the Tyndall National Institute, Ireland, as part of the ongoing QAMSS SRI Advanced Technology Lecture Series for Easter Term 2025.
In a highly engaging presentation titled "Heterogeneous Integration of Photonic Devices with Waveguide Platforms Using Transfer Printing", Professor Corbett highlighted the transformative role of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in addressing the rapidly growing demand for bandwidth driven by AI and high-performance computing.
He introduced a pioneering transfer printing strategy for heterogeneously integrating lasing, modulating, and detecting components onto silicon-based waveguides. The technique enables clean separation and precise transfer of compound semiconductor materials, offering a scalable pathway to more energy-efficient and compact photonic systems—ultimately compatible with semiconductor foundry processes.
The talk drew strong interest from the QAMSS community and concluded with an insightful Q&A session that underscored the relevance of Professor Corbett’s work across disciplines.
