On Friday, 11 July 2025, the Cambridge Graphene Centre was pleased to welcome Professor Il Jeon from Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea, as part of the QAMSS (Quantum and Advanced Materials for a Sustainable Society) lecture series.
Professor Jeon, who leads pioneering research in nano-carbons and biomaterials, delivered a lecture titled “Nano-Carbons and Biomaterials for Next-Generation Devices.” In his talk, Prof. Jeon presented his team’s latest work on the synthesis of nano-carbon allotropes and nature-inspired organic compounds, exploring their applications in diverse areas such as optoelectronics, batteries, neuromorphic systems, and quantum sensors.
A particular highlight was Prof. Jeon’s innovative approach to producing fullerenes and carbon nanotubes using captured CO₂ and electronic waste. These materials play a key role in enhancing next-generation device performance, contributing as additives, active materials, charge transporters, or electrodes. His research addresses critical challenges faced by conventional devices—such as improving photoelectric conversion efficiency, durability, and flexibility—while offering sustainable solutions to global environmental issues. The lecture drew participants from across the University of Cambridge, reflecting strong interest in materials discovery, sustainable technologies, and future device innovation.
